Development of Manganese-Based Nanoparticles as Contrast Probes for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

MRI is one of the most important imaging tools in clinics. It interrogates nuclei of atoms in a living subject, providing detailed delineation with high spatial and temporal resolutions. To compensate the innate low sensitivity, MRI contrast probes were developed and widely used. These are typically paramagnetic or superparamagnetic materials, functioning by reducing relaxation times of nearby ...

Near infrared-fluorescent and magnetic resonance imaging molecular probe with high T1 relaxivity for in vivo multimodal imagingw

Integration of optical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods in one setting is appealing due to the complementary nature of MRI’s high spatial and temporal resolution and the high molecular sensitivity of optical imaging. In particular, deep tissue penetration of near-infrared (NIR) photons and minimal autofluorescence in this wavelength range favors the assessment of molecular events in...

Gold nanoparticles functionalised with fast water exchanging Gd3+ chelates: linker effects on the relaxivity.

The relaxivity displayed by Gd(3+) chelates immobilized onto gold nanoparticles is the result of the complex interplay between the nanoparticle size, the water exchange rate and the chelate structure. In this work we study the effect of the length of ω-thioalkyl linkers, anchoring fast water exchanging Gd(3+) chelates onto gold nanoparticles, on the relaxivity of the immobilized chelates. Gold ...

New gadolinium complexes as magnetic resonance imaging--contrast agents.

We have investigated the physicochemical and paramagnetic properties of the new gadolinium complexes of N-(pyrid-2-yl-methyl)-ethylenediamine-N,N,N-triacetic acid (Gd-PEDTA) and N-tris(2-aminoethyl)amine-N,N,N,N,N,N+hexaacetic acid(Gd-TTAHA). The relaxivities as well as the thermodynamic and conditional stability constants of these complexes with respect to the physiological relevance were dete...

Gd(III) functionalized gold nanorods for multimodal imaging applications.

We demonstrate a novel noncovalent method for producing Gd(III)-functionalized gold nanorods as multimodal contrast agents for MRI and CT imaging. The ligand is connected to the surface of the gold nanorods by a noncovalent bond making the Gd(III) ions directly accessible to water molecules, and resulting in a longitudinal relaxivity as high as 21.3 mM(-1) s(-1). In addition, compared with sphe...
